Luoyang is a city located in the Henan province of China. The prefectural city is situated at the confluence area of Yellow River and Luo River. My trip to Luoyang was an unforgettable experience. If you are interested in learning about ancient Chinese civilizations, you should definitely visit Luoyang. Owing to its historical past, the city has acquired the title of being one of the “cradles of Chinese civilization”. Listed below are some of the places worth visiting if you are in Luoyang.

  • Longmen Grottoes

One of the most popular tourist destinations in the city is the Longmen Grottoes or the Longmen Caves. Here you can see thousands of statues carved out of the cave rocks. The statue of Vairocana Buddha carved on the Fengxian Cave is the main attraction of the place. The statue which dates back to 676 AD is 17.14 meters tall. There is also a cave that has 15000 statues of Buddha and is popularly known as ‘the cave of ten thousand Buddhas’.

  • Luoyang Museum

Built in the year 1974, the Luoyang Museum preserves a collection of relics that speak of the cultural heritage of the city as an ancient Chinese capital ruled by several dynasties. These relics and artifacts are retrieved from various excavation sites in and around Luoyang and include items like pottery, gold wares, paintings, statues, and calligraphic works. The oldest exhibits in the museum date back to the Neolithic times.

  • White Horse Temple

Built-in 68 AD, the White Horse Temple is believed to be the first ever Buddhist temple of China. The temple buildings and the premises occupy an area of 32 acres. There are many halls, courtyards, and gardens in the place that constitute a mesmerizing sight. The major attractions of the site are the ancient statues of Maitreya, Shakyamuni Buddha, Jade Buddha, Avalokiteśvara, and 2 white horses.
